Half-Portrait 2011

Throughout this school year, we have learned new painting techniques and have developed the skills of our inner artists. He have done several pieces concerning facial proportions, and to be honest, it has not been that easy. Doing this half-portrait, I was able to experience the complexity and simpleness of the human nature. Things that we consider part of our daily lives, part of ourselves and of those around us, might seem simple, but this experience showed me that transmitting what we see onto a piece of paper, might be more complex than what it appears to be.
The overall goal of this project was to transmit all we have learned throughout our years in school and apply the new concepts and techniques onto a two dimension piece. We were introduced to new materials such as blending sticks, pencils with different tonalities, etc. Some of the challenges and obstacles that were presented, was how to make a drawing turn into a realistic thing, the hair specially turned out to be truly challenging. However with some dedication and practice, we can all let that artist inside of each one of us, to be expressed.

2011

This piece of art, is most likely one of the most personal and significant I had done. Basically it represents the liberty each person has to decide the path of their life, either good or bad. We have been longly taught that white is the color of goodness and liberty, however this can be relative, because the black birds can also represent the bad, infiltrating in the world of hope. In the other side, the black can symbolize darkness, no exit and desperation; the white birds however, tell us that there is always a chance and an option to improve and become a better person, that it is never late to start again. This painting show us that liberty can go in whichever direction a person wants, and that in both cases, something good can work. Finally the red stripe in the middle, is where every single person starts, every person starts being innocent and genuine, it is time that can only determine in which direction that person can go. The kid on the middle, symbolizes that everyone has something to hold on to, something that keeps us moving along the cycle of life, something that keeps us in reality. Still, which side is the good one, that depends on the point of view of each individual.
During the effecting of this drawing, I used a series of elements, I used acrylics for most of the painting and pencil for the details. The main goal of this project for me, was to see how deeply a thought can be transmitted, through a simple usage of color, techniques and designs.

Symbolic Map 2010

The Symbolic Map project, was probably one of the most intimate and self-discovery projects we have done during this year. At first, I tried to think about the things that identified me the most, but that resulted to be much harder than what I thought; instead, I decided to think about the things that make me happy and feel alive. This map at first seemed to me, as a way to get people to know me better, but it was then when I realized, that it was a way to get to know myself better.

During the execution of this map, we learned several techniques with water colors and water pencils. One of the techniques I personally liked the most, was the blending of water colors and then adding the salt, which gave a whole new perspective and texture to the art piece. The major goal of the project was to let us experience and discover the different painting methods that suited best with our likes and interests, to transmit who we really were by means of art, and to simply have fun while doing it.
